The Chair of Governors’ Address: Strategic & Financial Overview, Senior School Prize-Giving Evening July 2026

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

As Chair of the Governing Board, it is my pleasure to stand before you this evening to present our strategic and financial overview of the school. My goal is to lift the curtain on the governance of our School, providing you with a transparent view of the fiscal discipline and long-term planning that secures your children's educational future.

Next year, Cransley School will mark its golden anniversary — fifty years of learning and laughter here at Belmont Hall. I can report to you today with absolute, data-supported certainty: never in its history has this institution been as large, as resilient, or as financially healthy as it is right now.

Choosing an independent education represents a profound, conscious financial commitment for any family.  In the current national climate, it is impossible to escape the media discussion surrounding the pressures facing smaller independent schools. We hear of contraction, falling enrollment, and institutional closures across the country. It is entirely reasonable for you to look at the macroeconomic landscape and ask questions about the stability of the school.

The Board’s message to you today is clear: Cransley is intentionally built, managed, and insulated to weather these external forces. We are not merely reacting to the times; we are looking to the horizon and preparing years in advance.

Our operational position is exceptionally robust. In our latest externally audited financial overview for the fiscal year ending August 2025, Cransley achieved a total income of £4.2million. Ninety-two per cent of this revenue was generated via school fees, charging for lunches, and for transport, with the remainder driven by interest, extra-curricular activities, and fundraising.

Crucially, our operating surplus for the year stood at £506,000, a consequence of the continued growth of the school during this period.

In a healthy, well-governed independent school, a surplus is not "profit" to be extracted; it is a vital fund for institutional renewal and development. Every penny of this surplus has been directly reinvested into your children’s daily environments: securing a business reserve, financing the bespoke window replacements of Belmont Hall, resurfacing and developing our car parks, enhancing and refurbishing other elements of this glorious mansion and, in particular, embedding our next-generation IT infrastructure.

Our baseline balance sheet is a testament to our long-term stability. Our total assets stand at £4.9 million against liabilities of £2.1 million, providing Cransley with net assets—our true overall value—of £2.8 million. We maintain £2.2 million in available cash. This is rare amongst many schools in Cheshire.

Our governing policy goal is to hold four to six months of operating costs in liquid assets, so that Cransley has the capital runway to absorb fluctuations comfortably, without having to compromise the quality of our provision or force sudden, reactive financial challenges onto you, our parent body.  We own significantly more than we owe. Your school is fiscally secure.

This financial health is the direct dividend of our completed 2022–2026 Strategic Plan. Under our governing framework of "Trust and Verify," the Board has collaborated with Mr Pollock, working hand-in-hand, to move Cransley into a sustainable, highly innovative, deeply caring, two-form entry school, while adamantly preserving our small class size averages.

Over the course of this four-year cycle, we have invested substantial capital into our physical assets, creating the entire science and technology building, transforming old laboratory spaces into part of a dedicated Junior School campus, establishing our Pupil Wellbeing Hub, modernising our staff and administrative facilities, and of course improving the classrooms. By the end of next academic year, every room in the entire school will have been fully refurbished, and then, like painting the Forth Bridge, we will start over again.

Academically, the strategic plan delivered our innovative Spiral curriculum from EYFS to GCSE, embedded cutting edge pedagogical approaches, including the development of AI, and rolling out the landmark four and a half day per week timetable restructure, which we believe has yielded immense balance and focus for our Senior pupils. We have grown safely, organically, and with a relentless emphasis on high quality.

As we look forward towards our 2026–2030 Strategic Vision, our objective moves from building a stable foundation to refining a flexible, functional, future-proof educational experience, whilst maintaining our inclusive spirit.

Governance over the next four years will demand impeccable operational compliance. The Board is already overseeing and testing our systems to ensure absolute alignment with the evolving requirements of KCSIE 2026, the management of on-line safety and digital hygiene, for allergen safety, the statutory implementation of Martyn’s Law for estate security by September 2027, and much much more. Such is the regulatory demand on all schools.

As we remain at the leading edge of educational technology, for which we are widely recognised, we will be deploying a sophisticated new Management Information System to unify pupil data, academic logs, and pastoral notes under a single digital architecture.

Being small and driven, means that we can be innovative and flexible - we believe the two best assets a school can have.

Our business models will continue to innovate. We are actively diversifying the Governing Board, intentionally recruiting commercial experts with backgrounds in property investment, commercial marketing, and corporate entrepreneurship. We are also actively seeking out a younger demographic of Governors - alumni aged 24 to 35 - to ensure that the voices shaping our long-term strategy are properly connected to the realities of the modern working world, and the realities of young people growing up in it.

Finally, we want to enrich the familial social experience of being a Cransley parent. Our upcoming estate masterplan includes a new outdoor classroom and event centre, but also the creation of a developing Social Village within our grounds - complete with Wi-Fi and collaboration spaces - alongside parent-pupil workshops on our school farm, perhaps a marketplace and a new Parent Mentor scheme to welcome incoming families.

We aspire to tap into the talent that sits in this room - to enhance the education and experience our pupils receive.

Ladies and gentlemen, exceptional educational leadership does not occur in a vacuum. Without risk of excessive flattery, it requires a headteacher with an inspiring vision, an ambitious senior leadership team, a staff room of professional practitioners, and a governing body with forensic and financial discipline. At Cransley School, you have all of these.

Your investment is safe, our school is thriving, and your children are walking through an idyllic environment that is preparing them beautifully for the decades ahead. Thank you for your continued trust in us, your loyalty, and your shared belief in our remarkable school.

Thank you very much.

Professor Darren Walter
